Advanced Treatment of Palm Oil Mill Effluent Using Thermally Activated Persulfate Oxidation

Advanced treatment of biologically processed palm oil mill effluent (BIOTPOME), which possesses a potential danger to the water sources is required meet Malaysian discharge standard, as BIOTPOME contains high level chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids and grease even after going through conventional process. The significant but insufficient efficiency ponding system in Malaysia urged an alternative method treat recalcitrant organic compounds. Thus, post-treatment using oxidation by thermally activated persulfate process was proposed solve this issue. In order maximize removal COD color, central composite design (CCD) module response surface approach used optimize interactions variables temperature, S2O82−/COD ratio, reaction time. identify terms interacting factors, CCD performed batch study from statistical models responses were created. All confirmed analysis variance (ANOVA) showing significances with Prob > F less than 0.1. optimal performance obtained at temperature 67.4 °C, ratio 9.8 time 120 min, rendering 85.65% color 85.74%. total cost for RM0.94 per liter.
